Beauty Bloggers Expectations | A Lifestyle Rant
Thursday, September 11, 2014As a beauty blogger I think people have certain expectations of you and this gets me quite upset sometimes and I feel people expect me to look perfect every day. I'm sorry to disappoint but this is not the case sometimes I really just want to sit in my PJs no makeup on, spots on show and not give a monkeys.
Im not talking about you but people who are not sure what blogging is about they cannot understand how I can sit and write hours about lipsticks and blushes when I'm sat there bare faced. They don't understand beauty blogging is more than a pretty face of makeup and that the whole looking after your skin and the cleansing process is just as important.
Don't get me wrong I love makeup and wear it almost every day but I love my makeup free days too I love to go into work at least twice a week with just a freshly cleansed and moisturised face. I feel that this gives my skin the break it needs so I can then spend the weekend testing out new looks and wearing as much makeup as I want.
Comments like 'ooh you do look better with a bit of face on' or 'you do look a little pale today are you ill' really get to me too. I'm sorry if my naked face offends you but its the only one I have and I think it serves me well I cant complain.
I also find it the other way if you wear too much people also comment too like ' are you off on stage' or 'who are you trying to impress' Can we ever win!!
(what they expect) (what I actually look like)
(Don't worry this is not my makeup I've done it on pic monkey)
Sorry for this rant but just something that's been on my mind for sometime and need to write it down to get it out of my head.
Do you find it the same?
Do people expect you as a beauty blogger to look pristine everyday?

Just like the word 'Feminism' is being reclaimed, I think the term 'Beauty Blogger' needs to be reclaimed!
ReplyDeleteThe thing is, women (and men!) like to talk about beauty. What products work, what don't, what you liked, what you didn't - and that's all beauty blogging really is!
I'm not a beauty blogger but I love reading them - so great for finding tips and learning more about a product before buying!
Tbh, I get similar when I say I'm a travel blogger - people seem confused as to why I'm not constantly jetting around the world (if only!)

Would be lovely to visit a different place every week, what you dont do that?? haha x
DeleteI don't wear make up at all most days - it's something fun to do on occasion (and always when I'm meeting other bloggers!) and everyone I work with is always surprised when I DO turn up with anything on my face! But then I'm just lazy ;)
ReplyDeleteBlogging is such a weird hobby to try to explain to people who don't really know about it!
I don't wear make up always. People expeck too much from us. To look perfect all the time. I agree.

I've been asked the 'are you feeling ok today, you look ill?' one too and it was embarrassing at the time but then again, they weren't meaning to be rude. I don't think people expect me to look perfect everyday but I don't count myself as a true beauty blogger anyway x

I 100% do not wear make-up everyday - Sometimes the thought of going through that make-up process is even tiring to think about let alone having to wake up before school and having to do it !. I often get ohh are you tired? cause you look very tired today (on my no make-up days). I know they mean no harm but it can get a little aggravating !.

I had this in work today! Just because I go for a more natural look at work, she thought it meant I wasn't keep on make-up. Err hello have you seen my collection?! Being a blogger doesn't mean you have to cake yourself in products 24/7.

Love this! I barely wear make up ever, I don't even own more than 1 foundation but I love writing about beauty and will continue as long as I enjoy it :) Thanks for sharing x

Righ on!
ReplyDeleteI'm with you on this - it's always unaware friends ('friends!') that seem to have that view. You know me, I tend to wear fairly natural makeup most of the time, or none - unless it's a night out. (I also think the older you get *cough*, it's better to look polished and chic than 'made up' for work or during the day.
I'm not sure I think people expect me to wear lots of makeup on a daily basis, if anything I always wear minimal makeup unless I'm on a nightout :) xx

I blog about beauty things, but I'm far from perfect. I always worry when I tell people I know that I write a blog if they're shocked by it. I love the makeup less days :D x

I love this, blunt but not too harsh and to the point. I've only been blogging myself for a few months but I've been using making up since I was able to do it on myself, wearing it to school etc. But I still love the days where I've given my face a break, a good amount of coconut oil seaped in and just generally being able to rub my eyes if they are itching lol x
ReplyDeleteYou look beautiful with no makeup! Nevermind peoples expectations, what you are is far better than what they want x
