£1 Beauty Buys – Do we really have to pay more for quality??

Tuesday, June 11, 2013

If you’re anything like me and you’re like a moth to a light when it comes to pretty packaging, you too will be a sucker to high end makeup.

In Debenhams I’m the one walking around the makeup stands not saying not much more than oooos and aaarrrs with the occasional WOW thrown in. I cannot walk past the YSL lipstick without picking one up to take in its beauty.

Are we really paying for Quality products or is it just the packaging and name that’s causing the magpie effect?

I have purchased some £1.00 products to see If we really have to pay more for quality, I will rate and swatch these products and give my honest opinion on how they apply, their lasting effect and colour (pigmentation).

The 2 brands I found that have £1.00 product lines are E.L.F and MUA so picked a couple of items from each.

Eye shadows

I have gone for 3 from the MUA pearl £1 range in the Shades 1, 29 and 30 (really creative names I know) and the Brightening Eye Colour quad from E.L.F in Ethereal.
As you can see the packaging on the MUA isn’t too bad for a £1 and it is quite sturdy.  As for the Swatches  I am so impressed with the pigmentation of these. Will definitely be using MUA eyeshadow in the future.

The E.L.F on the other hand as the below swatches show (or not show in this case) the pigmentation is poor. I know I know what did I expect for a pound but i have to say i was quite disappointed especially after using a few E.L.F products in the past and the quality has been a lot better. I wont be repurchasing this. The packaging looks really cheap too.

I choose 2 of each MUA and E.L.F. I Choose the Shades 2 and 15 for MUA and again I was really impressed with these I wear shade 2 which is a purple shade on a daily basis now and the other colour is also a lovely coral and the best part about these is that the bottom screws off and there is a small amount of lipstick which can be used with a brush. Brilliant idea.

The 2 E.L.F shades I choose were Sociable and Seductive and these actually wasn't that bad the colour was definitely there but staying power could have been better. But I would purchase these again for the price.

Last but not least the Nail Polishes

I choose 2 colours from each brand again and the shades were Strawberry Crush and Frozen Yogurt from MUA and Fire coral and Red Velvet from E.L.F
I have to say the E.L.F was best for applying as the application brushes were much better than the MUA ones but they took that long to dry they smudged. Also after about a day they both showed signs of chipping.

I do think that sometimes we do have to pay for quality especially staying power but if you are on a budget there are some really good bargain finds.

So looks like I will still be spending the big bucks in Debenham's still but at least I can fill my makeup with a few cheaper items so I don't feel quite as guilty

What are your thoughts on this Subject???

  5. I've been looking for a post like this in a long time, because I've found many times eyeliners or nail polishes manufactured by Romanian brands which cost 1-2 euros and which worked better for me. I'm not saying that the powerful brands don't have good products, it's just that you pay a lot for the label when you buy a lipstick, for example.
